Chris
Peters is a well known authority and adviser on company director issues,
boardroom matters, corporate governance, corporate ethics and practices. He is
widely recognised for his public appearances on these and other corporate
matters. Chris is a visiting lecturer on
directors duties, company law, and corporate governance at the University of New
England.
Chris
holds the Corporate Directors’ Diploma from the University of New England, he
is a Life Senior Fellow of the Corporate Directors’ Association of Australia,
a Foundation Life Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and a
Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management He was the foundation Executive
Director of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (1990-91), Chief
Executive of the Company Directors’ Association of Australia (1987-90), and
National President of the Company Directors’ Association of Australia
(1984-87). He is the Chairman and Managing Director of the Corporate Directors
Association of Australia Limited (1997-).
He
was a founding member (the only non-lawyer) of the Legal Committee of the
Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Companies & Securities Advisory
Committee. This is the statutory authority responsible for advising the Minister
on the Australian Securities Commission and the Corporations law and securities
law and administration.
Chris
was a Member of the NSW Government’s Corporate Crime Task Force to review
operations of NSW Corporate Affairs Commission and a member of three-person
editorial committee which drafted the formal report to the NSW Attorney-General.
He
was the publisher of the inaugural 750+ page book “Company Directors’
Manual” which was published by Prentice Hall in October 1990 and he authored
the chapter on the Commonwealth Companies Legislative Framework and the
Australian Securities Commission. There are 21 specialist authors for the
Manual.
Chris
is an author of “Collapse Incorporated” (published by CCH Australia Limited)
which deals with the corporate collapses in 2002-2002, including Ansett, HIH,
FAI, One.Tel, and Harris Scarfe. He is an author of the Corporate Directors’ Diploma Course conducted jointly by the University of New England and the Corporate Directors’ Association of Australia. He is Chairman of the Corporate Directors’ Diploma Course. Chris is the author of numerous published papers on topics such as “Role & Responsibilities of Company Directors”, “The New National Companies Scheme”, “Keeping Rogue Directors out of the Boardroom”, “The Challenge for Corporate Australia” etc. Chris has presented papers on
company director and corporate matters at seminars throughout Australia, and in
a number of overseas countries, advises on directors’ duties, corporate
governance, other board room matters, and made Boardroom presentations and
presented papers to a large number of clients. He has presented papers on directors' duties to many organisations
including the NSW Law Society, the College of Law, NSW Corporate Affairs
Commission, Corporate Lawyers Association, Business Law Education Centre, IIR's
legal series, IBC's legal series, CPA's Australia, and the Institute of
Chartered Accountants. He has conducted seminars including “Directors’ Duties”, “Duties & Responsibilities of Company Directors and Officers”, “Leadership from the Boardroom”, “Corporate Vision”, “Insider Trading” and “Management Buyout”.
Chris
wrote the Australian Institute of Company Directors contribution to the
Corporate Practices & Conduct Discussion Paper prepared and issued by the
Institute, National Companies and Securities Commission, Australian Stock
Exchange, Institute of Chartered Accountants and Business Council. The final
paper was released by Henry Bosch in 1991. Chris Peters
has appeared before the following Federal Parliamentary Committees to give evidence:-
(1) Senate Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs - two
inquiries: a) The Social & Fiduciary Responsibility of Company
Directors (b) Insider Trading and (2) the Joint Parliamentary Select Committee
into Commonwealth Corporations and Securities Legislation.
Chris
initiated, negotiated, implemented and marketed three types of insurance for
directors’ and officers’ liability for company directors:

Director & Officer Legal Expenses Chris is a director of a number of companies and has experience as a director (both public and private) of companies in very diverse industries. These include the service industry, management consulting, publishing, insurance broking, education, retail trading, import, distribution, international trade, investment, marine, pastoral, charitable and not-for-profit professional and trade organisations. He is on the Board of three statutory authorities, a Director of three public companies and a number of private companies and incorporated associations.
