Introduction
Adelaide is a
vibrant, stylish and elegant city, with just over one million residents. The
city is nestled along the banks of the Torrens River and is positioned between
Gulf St Vincent and the Adelaide Hills.
The CBD, designed by Colonel William Light in 1836, is laid out in a square mile
grid and is surrounded by a border of beautiful parklands. It's easy to navigate
your way around this picturesque city and most attractions are within easy
walking distance. Majestic colonial architecture can still be found within the
city, particularly along North Terrace and a historical walk around the city is
a great way to discover Adelaide's origins.
Adelaide is a relaxed city of pubs, cafes, restaurants, fresh produce and wine.
Regional South Australia produces some of the best wine and fresh produce found
in Australia. In Adelaide's many fine restaurants along Rundle Street, Gouger
Street, North Adelaide and along the coast, these foodstuffs are turned into
wonderous dishes for locals and visitors to enjoy. With an exciting local
cuisine ever developing and almost every culture represented by a restaurant,
Adelaide is one of the most exciting places to dine out in Australia.
Many sporting and cultural events are held in Adelaide throughout the year,
encompassing the arts, food and wine, gardening, car racing and equestrian
events. Every two years the city comes alive with the internationally acclaimed
Adelaide Festival of Arts and the Adelaide Fringe. Such eagerness to celebrate
has provided Adelaide with the label 'the festival city'.
Adelaide is a wonderful place to experience the heritage, culture and
convenience of a larger city, without all of the frustrations. The city of
Adelaide makes an excellent base for visitors wishing to explore the state's
other exciting regions, many of which can be explored in day trips. With so many
attractions and activities based in the city, visitors are sure to fall in love
with the wonders of Adelaide.
